Understanding drilling & well construction

Compare the functions and applications in this category, then use the catalogue filters to narrow your requirement. Each topic includes detailed selection information and an enquiry form.

Rig components and top drives

Rig components support the lifting, rotation and handling functions of a drilling installation. A top drive supplies rotary motion from the travelling assembly, with associated controls and mechanical interfaces specific to the rig configuration.

Rig construction, upgrades and maintenance use complete assemblies and identified replacement parts. The load path and installed equipment arrangement determine compatibility.

Drill bits and downhole drilling tools

Drill bits cut formation at the bottom of a well, while downhole drilling tools support functions such as directional control, enlargement and energy transmission. Tool selection follows the formation and drilling programme.

Well construction uses bits, motors, reamers and other drilling assemblies across different hole sections. Expected formations and operating objectives affect the selected tool combination.

Drill pipe and bottom-hole assemblies

Drill pipe transmits rotation and provides a fluid path along the drill string. Bottom-hole assemblies combine selected tubulars and tools near the bit to achieve the planned drilling and measurement objectives.

Drilling operations use strings with defined mechanical properties and connections. Replacement or additional components must fit the existing string and inspection requirements.

Mud pumps and solids control

Mud pumps circulate drilling fluid through the drilling system. Solids-control equipment separates selected drilled solids from the returning fluid, helping maintain the properties required by the drilling-fluid programme.

Drilling rigs use pumps, shakers and other separation equipment as a coordinated fluid-handling system. Flow rate and solids loading influence equipment duties.

Cementing and well-control equipment

Cementing equipment supports the preparation and placement of cement systems specified in a well programme. Well-control equipment provides separate pressure-control functions within the approved rig and well configuration.

Well construction uses both equipment families at different stages. Their responsibilities and package boundaries should remain distinct even when included in one procurement package.

MWD and LWD tools

MWD means measurement while drilling and commonly includes directional measurements. LWD means logging while drilling and provides selected formation measurements during well construction. Tools, telemetry and surface acquisition form a compatible measurement system.

Directional drilling and formation evaluation use these systems to collect information from the drilling assembly. The required measurements depend on the well's geological and engineering objectives.

Managed pressure drilling equipment

Managed pressure drilling equipment supports controlled management of the drilling pressure environment within an engineered programme. Packages can include rotating control devices, manifolds, measurement and automation components with defined rig interfaces.

Specific well-construction programmes use MPD systems to manage their approved operating envelope. The equipment requirement follows a project-specific drilling and integration design.

Casing running and cementing accessories

Casing-running tools handle or install casing strings, while cementing accessories support the planned casing and cement arrangement. Centralizers, float equipment and other components each perform a defined role in the well design.

Well construction uses these accessories alongside casing and liner installation. The casing dimensions, well trajectory and placement programme determine the required configuration.

BOP stacks and pressure control components

Blowout preventer stacks and associated pressure-control components form part of a well-control system. Their configuration combines mechanical assemblies, connections and controls selected to the approved well and rig design.

Drilling and selected intervention installations use BOP systems under a defined engineering and operating programme. Replacement components must match the exact installed arrangement.
