Understanding instrumentation & control

Compare the functions and applications in this category, then use the catalogue filters to narrow your requirement. Each topic includes detailed selection information and an enquiry form.

Pressure gauges and transmitters

Pressure gauges provide local indication, while pressure transmitters convert a pressure measurement into a signal for monitoring or control. Gauge, absolute and differential pressure describe different measurement references that must be matched to the application.

Process lines, vessels, filters and utility networks use pressure measurement for operating information and control. Differential pressure can also support level or flow measurement in an engineered arrangement.

Temperature sensors and thermowells

Temperature sensors measure process temperature using elements such as resistance temperature detectors or thermocouples. A thermowell is a protective process connection surrounding a compatible sensor; its material and geometry are part of the mechanical design.

Piping, vessels, machinery and thermal systems use temperature measurements for monitoring and control. RTD, PT100 and thermocouple references identify different sensing arrangements.

Radar and ultrasonic level instruments

Radar level instruments use electromagnetic signals, while ultrasonic instruments use sound to measure distance to a surface. Their suitability depends on the medium, vessel geometry and conditions along the measurement path.

Storage tanks, process vessels and selected open-channel applications use non-contact level measurement. Guided wave radar is another arrangement where the signal follows a probe.

Flow meters

Flow meters measure the movement of liquid or gas through a defined path. Different measuring principles respond to volume, mass or related physical properties, so the required measurement basis matters as much as line size.

Process control, utility accounting and transfer measurement use flow meters. Coriolis, magnetic, ultrasonic, turbine and differential-pressure methods address different fluid and installation conditions.

Analyzers and sample systems

Process analyzers measure composition or quality characteristics of a process stream. Sample systems transport and condition a representative sample so the analyzer receives it within the instrument's specified operating limits.

Gas quality, combustion monitoring, water chemistry and product control use analyzers. The measurement objective determines the sampling arrangement and required response time.

Switches, indicators and local gauges

Switches provide a discrete response at a specified condition, while indicators and local gauges show a measured variable directly. These devices supplement or support electronic measurement and control systems.

Level indication, pressure alarms, flow confirmation and temperature monitoring are common applications. The device must match the process connection and expected environmental exposure.

Vibration and machinery monitoring

Machinery monitoring systems collect signals that describe machine condition. Vibration sensors, proximity probes and related monitoring hardware provide information that can support fault assessment and maintenance decisions when interpreted in the machine context.

Pumps, compressors, turbines and motors use condition monitoring. The measurement locations and machine dynamics determine which signals are useful.

Instrument calibration equipment

Instrument calibration equipment supplies reference signals or measurements used to compare an instrument's response against a known basis. The required uncertainty, range and traceability determine whether a reference is appropriate for the measurement task.

Pressure calibrators, dry-block temperature sources and electrical calibrators support field maintenance and laboratory work. Deadweight testers provide another pressure-reference approach for specified applications.
