Understanding compressors, turbines & drivers

Compare the functions and applications in this category, then use the catalogue filters to narrow your requirement. Each topic includes detailed selection information and an enquiry form.

Centrifugal compressors

Centrifugal compressors increase gas pressure using rotating impellers and stationary flow passages. Gas composition, inlet conditions and the required pressure ratio influence the compressor's performance and its operating envelope.

Gas processing, pipeline stations, refrigeration and large process units use centrifugal compression. Changing process loads may require a defined capacity-control arrangement.

Reciprocating compressors

Reciprocating compressors compress gas in cylinders using pistons and inlet and discharge valves. Cylinder arrangement, staging and lubrication are selected for the gas composition and the required pressure and capacity.

Gas gathering, process compression and high-pressure gas duties commonly use reciprocating machines. Pulsation and mechanical loading form part of the package design.

Screw compressors and blowers

Screw compressors trap and compress gas between rotating elements. Blowers move gas at comparatively modest pressure differences; the required duty determines whether a compressor or blower arrangement is appropriate.

Utility air, gas handling, aeration and process ventilation use rotary equipment. Product contamination limits may require separation between the gas stream and lubricating oil.

Gas and steam turbines

Gas and steam turbines convert energy in a flowing working fluid into shaft power. They can drive generators or rotating machinery, with different fuel, steam and auxiliary-system requirements for each turbine arrangement.

Power generation and compressor or pump drives are common applications. The driven machine, speed range and available energy source establish the principal operating duty.

Compressor and turbine spares

Compressor and turbine spares are replacement components for the rotating machine and its supporting systems. Seals, valves, filters and internal parts are typically specific to an equipment model, serial number and design revision.

Scheduled overhauls and condition-based repairs require parts identified from maintenance records or the original bill of materials. Auxiliary-system components may have separate manufacturers.
